ODCA Forecast Hackathon 2014

You Are Invited

The Open Data Center Alliance, a non-profit global organization with the mission of accelerating cloud computing adoption, is holding its marquee conference, Forecast 2014, September 22-24 in San Francisco. One of the most exciting activities at the event will be its first-ever Hackathon.

This Hackathon will focus on the ODCA’s recently published paper: Open Data Center Alliance Best Practices: Architecting Cloud-Aware Applications Rev.1.0. The paper contains nine design patterns that show developers how to architect applications that run well in a cloud. The Hackathon will be a friendly competition where teams drawn from ODCA membership and the broader community will create a cloud app. Not only will the hackathon help reinforce the concepts described in the paper but there is a social agenda because teams will be building apps for non-profit usage: the theme is to create an app that does volunteer matching.

Hosted by HP, this is an excellent oportunity for peer-to-peer engagement, where developers are invited to learn more about the ODCA and how our best practices can support the creation of cloud based applications while also supporting a greater cause.

What do you need to bring to the table?

We are looking for developers able to code in a popular programming language/framework supported by HP – the Helion Cloud Platform as a Service (PaaS) application. All levels of programming expertise are welcome. If you are creative, enthusiastic, and motivated to help a non-profit cause, this is the place for you!

The Hackathon will consist of eight teams with up to six members each. You may register as an individual or bring an entire team. If you register as an individual, we will find a team for you.

What is the time commitment?

Time commitment is minimal prior to the Hackathon itself. You will engage with our team in a kickoff meeting but we ask that you do not start coding prior to the event day.

In order to prepare for the Hackathon, you are invited but not required to:

The Hackathon itself will be held on two consecutive days at Forecast in two four-hour blocks. Hackaton attendees will receive complimentary passes to Forecast and will be welcome to attend the event’s sessions, panels and receptions.

What application will the Hackathon create and why is it so important?

The app, which we are calling VolunteerMax, will help non-profit organizations bring volunteers together to accomplish its goals.

VolunteerMax will aim to simplify volunteer recruitment so non-profit organizations can get busy doing what matters most – help people work together for a better tomorrow.

Did we mention there is a prize for the winning team?

The winning application will be judged based on cloud-aware characteristics, implementation of the design patterns that are described in the ODCA cloud-aware applications paper, successful deployment in the HP Helion PaaS cloud, and by following the input of the non-profit organizations that will be invited to participate.

There will be a public announcement at the Forecast Award Ceremony and a prominent showcase on the ODCA website and across social media channels, plus the winning team will also receive a special prize as a reward for their participation.

However, the real reward goes to all non-profit organizations that will be able to benefit from this cloud-based application and better match their volunteer workforce to its programs and causes.
