The Road Map to Cloud Maturity

An enterprise migrating to cloud and hybrid IT needs to have clear goals. The ODCA Cloud Maturity Model (CMM) provides those goals and gives an organization a reliable road map for meeting them.

Figure 1: Cloud Maturity Model has five progressive levels of maturity

The CMM provides a portfolio of domains and perspectives, so an enterprise can select the best approach to cloud maturity. It helps an enterprise analyze its current state and chart the implementation of cloud technologies toward a mature deployment focused on specific business outcomes.

The objective of the CMM is to help an enterprise:

  • Evaluate where its IT organization stands in its ability to adopt and integrate cloud services
  • Identify an enterprise’s targets for cloud and hybrid IT integration
  • Map an organization’s migration toward effective cloud and hybrid IT

The ODCA CMM offers best practices for a clear process for migrating an enterprise to a mature cloud or hybrid IT model.

Analysis from Key Perspectives

The CMM analyzes cloud maturity from two key perspectives. This enables an organization to select the use cases and business models that are most aligned with its business needs.

The nontechnical capability perspective within the maturity model analyzes the business application and outcomes of cloud technology across specific domains. This perspective includes cloud service models, cloud deployment models, and capabilities for each cloud domain.

The technical capability perspective approaches cloud maturity by analyzing cloud, information, and communications technology in the context of a number of possible use cases. This perspective provides a framework for identifying specific solutions to enterprise adoption of cloud and hybrid IT.

The Benefits of Cloud Maturity

The CMM ensures that an enterprise identifies key elements on its road map to achieving the expected benefits of cloud technology integration. These benefits include:

  • Capability. Competencies across domains
  • Efficiency. Reusable, cost-effective standard designs and solutions
  • Velocity. Ability to change and deploy services in near real time
  • Flexibility. Ability to align services to dynamic business needs
  • Quality. Increased focus on standardized services across the enterprise

Achieving Cloud Maturity for the Enterprise

A road map toward cloud maturity starts with knowing the level of cloud maturity across the enterprise. The CMM identifies five levels of cloud maturity. Moving through these levels allows an organization to achieve key characteristics in its cloud solution:

  • Federation of users across multiple cloud or hybrid IT services with one set of credentials
  • Interoperability of cloud and hybrid IT services
  • Open standards for faster adoption and maximum benefits of cloud deployment
